Old world maps
Maps of the whole world from the 1500s to the early 1900s: the Waldseemüller map that first named America, Ortelius's and Blaeu's atlas maps, double-hemisphere maps of the 17th century, and the world maps of the age of empire.
Why they are free to use: Most were published more than a century ago, so their copyright has expired. Each map's page shows its own licence basis and a credit line.
