Travis Thieme of Seattle, Washington, looks over a large-scale historical map of Europe made by his great-great grandfather, Professor P.A. Paul Thieme, in the late 19th century, during a visit to the Geography and Maps Division reading room, March 9, 2026. The hand drawn and painted map on canvas measures more than 8x10 feet, and was presented to President Harry Truman by Prof. Thieme's son Henri of Kansas CIty, and was acquired by the Library in 1960. The displayed the map during the "Relief Representation: An Exhibition of Maps" exhibit in 1974. Photo by Shawn Miller/. Note: Privacy and publicity rights for individuals depicted may apply.
